Edwardian Oyster Veneered Oval Serving Tray, Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An attractive Edwardian oval serving tray, the top beautifully veneered with highly figured timber arranged in a decorative radiating oyster pattern.

The oval top is surrounded by a raised, shaped gallery with an elegant undulating edge, giving the tray a particularly decorative profile. The rich figuring and contrasting tones of the veneer create an impressive symmetrical pattern across the surface.

A wonderfully decorative piece with a warm colour and good character, showing the surface marks and wear associated with age and use.

Equally appealing displayed on a large coffee table or ottoman as it would be used as a traditional serving tray.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Oyster veneering is a decorative technique developed in the 17th century using thin cross-sections of small tree branches or roots, creating repetitive circular grain patterns reminiscent of oyster shells.

Edwardian trays frequently utilised cabinet woods such as walnut, mahogany, and laburnum, applied over timber cores using traditional animal hide glues and finished with hand-rubbed polish.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneered segments displaying radial figure, subtle shrinkage lines along joint seams due to age, and natural surface patination.

Place the tray on a coffee table, ottoman, or sideboard as a grounding base for curated objects such as glass decanters, brass items, or ceramic vessels.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly, keeping the item away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and standing moisture.
