Description

Pair of Late 19th Century Dutch Delft Blue & White Pottery Cows

Brief Description:

This is a charming matched pair of late 19th-century Dutch Delft pottery cows, dating to circa 1880–1900.

Each cow is traditionally modelled standing upon a rectangular plinth and decorated by hand in the classic Delft blue and white palette, with attractive floral motifs and distinctive spotted markings.

A wonderfully decorative pair with plenty of character, displaying beautifully together and ideal for a collection of antique Delftware or European ceramics.

Note: Each piece is in good antique condition overall, with age-related wear and minor imperfections commensurate with their age. Both cows have some cosmetic imperfections/damage to the ears, as clearly shown in the photographs. These do not detract greatly from the overall appearance, and the pair continues to display very well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards, recognised for its blue and white hand-painted decoration inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

These figurines were hand-moulded from earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white tin glaze, hand-painted with cobalt oxide pigments, and fired at high temperatures to achieve a glossy finish.

Authentic pieces from this period frequently display maker marks or factory initials painted on the base, light glaze crazing, slight irregularities in hand-painted details, and minor wear to the exposed foot rim.

Arrange them as a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within an open bookcase alongside natural wood textures and neutral linen accents.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or using abrasive cleaning chemicals that could compromise the surface glaze.
