Description

A fine Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain Jardinière c.1800-04. Of flared shape, with two fixed gilt ring handles, on a round, fixed base, the 'Barr's Orange' ground further gilt with a geometric pattern and Greek key motif and reserving a front panel with a painting of Polyhymnia, who is the Muse of sacred poetry, hymns, and eloquence. Here finely painted en grisaille representing Temperance.

Possibly London decorated in the studio of Thomas Baxter in Gough Square by Thomas Baxter Studio. Thomas Baxter decorated by Coalport, Worcester & Swansea porcelains with figures in classical dress. 

In 1810 Thomas Baxter published An Illustration Of The Egyptian, Grecian, And Roman Costume; In Forty Outlines, With Descriptions, Selected, Drawn, & Engraved, by Thomas Baxter.

Incised 'B' mark to the base.

Condition: Two star cracks to the base and a small restored chip to the foot.

Manufactured during the Flight & Barr period of the Worcester porcelain factory (c. 17921804), these porcelain planters feature Neoclassical motifs, refined gilding, and Classical hand-painted figures typical of early nineteenth-century English ceramics.
