Extremely Rare Pair of 19th Century Gritstone Hand Carved Planters or Troughs. C1840

19th century
For Sale by CJ Antiques
Description

An exceptional, highly desirable matching pair of 19th-century hand-carved natural stone garden troughs. Originating from a rural estate, these troughs feature a scarce and architecturally striking "D-shape" or semi-octagonal profile with beautiful chamfered, multi-faceted outer walls. Finding an identical matching pair of hand-carved stone vessels is incredibly rare in the architectural salvage market. Their matching proportions make them an ideal choice for a landscape designer or premium garden project requiring symmetry—perfect for flanking a grand garden doorway, a formal pathway entrance, or positioning as focal points on an outdoor terrace. Both troughs boast a magnificent, thick encrustation of natural green moss, historic lichen, and weathered stone patina built up over generations in the British countryside. To preserve this irreplaceable organic character, the stone remains completely uncleaned and untouched. Dating to the mid-19th century, these heavy-duty vessels were originally custom-carved to sit beneath natural springs or estate hand-pumps. As such, they are structurally sound making them highly versatile for use as traditional water features, alpine rockeries, or distinctive garden planters

.Condition Report: In excellent antique condition. Structurally sound, heavy, and completely solid with no deep freeze-thaw cracks or structural splits. Superb, deep weathered patina with extensive natural lichen and moss coverage as pictured.

They measure 53cm wide x 43cm deep x 20cm high and weigh approx 60kg

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
