19th Century Hovis, Grocery and Post Office Delivery Hand Cart

19th century
For Sale by Elmgarden
Description

19th Century Hovis, Grocery and Post Office Delivery Hand Cart

This enduring piece was made in the 19th Century, by closely examining the script you can see it has changed hands a few time even back then

This Charming Dray was made over 100 years ago in wood, the cart has been sign painted some years ago advertising the services of “G Dew”

Also visible are advertisements for “POST OFFICE” “HOVIS” and addresses in ANERLY Croydon Rd S.E and Norwood Junction SE25.

The Cart has 2 large wood and iron Cart wheels (40” in diameter) and a third stabilising wheel, several opening doors and a deep drawer

The Paint work on the cart is in need of restoration, one of the wheels will need replacing, there is a fair bit of wood worm damage, and the canvas covered dome top roof is in need of some attention

So a project opportunity and well worth the restoring a very rare museum piece like this

The cart is 64” high, ( when level ), 72” long overall and 45” wide

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, hand carts were widely utilised by local merchants, bakers, and postal workers to transport goods through urban and rural streets prior to the adoption of motorised transport.

Traditional delivery carts were constructed using hardwoods for the frame and spoked wheels, reinforced with iron strapping, forged fittings, and painted timber or sheet metal panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-forged ironwork, traditional joinery, natural age-related paint craquelure, and visible wear on the wooden wheel rims and structural handles.

Antique delivery carts serve as focal points in large open spaces, functioning as display platforms in retail settings, museum environments, or industrial interior schemes.

Keep the object in a climate-controlled indoor space, remove dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid moisture or chemical cleaners that could degrade original paintwork or oxidise iron fittings.
