George III Country Oak Tripod Table, c.1770–85

A particularly attractive and honest George III country oak tripod table, dating to circa 1770–85, with a wonderfully warm colour and character acquired through generations of use.

The circular planked top displays the natural figuring, knots and variations of the timber beautifully, giving the table the relaxed character associated with the best pieces of English country furniture. It is raised upon a well-turned central column above a shaped tripod base, the three elegant cabriole legs terminating in simple pad feet.

Of particular charm is the restrained carved detail where the legs meet the central block, adding just enough decoration without detracting from the table’s pleasingly simple country appearance.

The table stands extremely well and retains an appealing rich, mellow surface and patina. The visible construction and age-related marks to the top form an important part of its character and give the piece the honest, untouched feel increasingly sought after in early country furniture.

Dating from the latter part of the 18th century, it is a highly decorative yet practical table, equally suited as a small supper table, occasional table or centre table in either a traditional or more contemporary interior.
