Description

This item is an antique, hand-carved rehal (or rihal), a traditional folding book stand used across the Islamic world to hold heavy holy manuscripts and copies of the Quran off the ground during reading. Crafted from a single or interlocking piece of dense dark hardwood, the piece is designed to fold completely flat for easy transport and storage. Its surface features intricate, heavy relief chip-carving filled with geometric patterns, triangles, and sunburst motifs, alongside distinctive circular and vertical pierced cutouts. This specific style of dense ornamentation is highly characteristic of traditional North African Amazigh.
