This French market seller’s basket dates from the 1900 period and reflects a rustic farmhouse style, originating from France where it was originally used in a market to transport fruit, vegetables, and flowers around the town. The piece is constructed from willow wicker in a dark brown colour, which has naturally darkened with age, and features a square woven base, flared sides, a high arched twisted handle, a braided rim detail, and a bamboo sledge beneath. The strong, sturdy item measures 46 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Today, this traditional basket makes a practical and decorative addition to a home. It suits placement on a kitchen island, a utility room counter, or a hallway floor, where it can be used for storing fresh produce, flowers, logs, or everyday household items while adding an authentic French country aesthetic to the interior space.

Woven wicker market baskets were standard utility items throughout 19th and early 20th-century rural France. Craftspeople and market vendors used sturdy woven willow containers to collect produce, cut flowers, and dry goods for daily trade.

Traditional European baskets are typically constructed from split or unpeeled willow rods, hazel switches, or cane. These organic materials are soaked prior to weaving to achieve flexibility, drying into a rigid structural form.

Authentic period basketry often exhibits irregular hand-woven construction, natural surface oxidation, and wear along the base rim. Fasteners may include early metal tacks or wrapped willow bindings rather than modern synthetic adhesives.

Wicker market baskets function as textural decorative accents when placed on kitchen islands, dining tables, or sideboards. They are frequently used to hold dried floral arrangements, linens, or daily hearth essentials.

Dust wicker regularly using a soft-bristled brush or low-suction vacuum attachment. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent brittleness, splinting, or organic degradation.
