Victorian James Dixon & Sons Field Campaign Spirit Set

19th century
Description

This is an excellent and complete leather-cased spirit flask set, which includes two graduated beakers or cups for field use. The two beakers nest together snugly, and the glass flask with its star-cut base and bayonet-closing cap fits neatly inside them. The cap bears marks identifying the maker as James Dixon & Sons, as well as their bugle and banner logo, though the beakers lack any hallmarks.

The case itself, made from patinated hide, boasts a rich colour and comes with its original over-shoulder strap and adjustable buckle—both in very good condition and still fully functional. The initials "EHW" are engraved on both beakers, the spirit flask cap, and the carrying case.

This Victorian gentleman's library barware set dates from circa 1880 and includes a brown patinated hide leather carrying case with an over-shoulder strap and adjustable buckle, a glass flask with a star-cut base, and two silver-plated nesting beaker cups. The hardware includes a central metal closure on the case and a bayonet-closing cap on the flask bearing maker marks for James Dixon & Sons alongside their bugle and banner logo. The initials "EHW" are engraved on both beakers, the spirit flask cap, and the carrying case. The beakers and flask fit snugly together inside the cylindrical leather case, which measures 21 cm high. In a home today, this complete campaign spirit set provides decorative barware for display on a sideboard top in a study, library, or living room. The leather strap shows creases from age and use, while the silver-plated beakers exhibit a polished finish with monogram engravings and visible wear consistent with nineteenth-century field use.

Originating in nineteenth-century Britain, campaign spirit sets were designed for military officers, travellers, and outdoor enthusiasts to transport spirits securely during field expeditions and hunts.

These sets typically feature blown glass or metal flasks encased in thick saddle leather, often accompanied by silver-plated or electroplated nickel silver nesting beakers.

Authentic examples often display makers marks from established Victorian silversmiths, silver plate hallmarks, hand-stitched leather casings, and period-appropriate monogram engravings.

Display the set open on a timber sideboard, drinks trolley, or bookshelf alongside vintage barware to add texture and historical character to a modern living space.

Clean glass components with warm water, gently polish silver-plated elements using a soft cloth with non-abrasive cream, and apply leather conditioner periodically to prevent cracking.
