Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Japanese Lacquer Cocktail Set to the 1920s.
A superb and highly decorative Japanese lacquer cocktail set, dating to circa 1920.

The set comprises six finely hand turned stemmed cups, crafted from strong hardwood and beautifully finished in lustrous black lacquer. Each cup has a richly gilded interior and is decorated to the front with a charming cockerel perched in a flowering Prunus tree, hand-painted in raised gold and red polychrome.

The matching cocktail shaker is an exceptional piece of craftsmanship in its own right. Finely hand-turned in three sections, it features unusual wooden screw-thread fittings and is finished in the same black lacquer, with a matching cockerel and flowering Prunus decoration.

The ensemble is completed by its original matching tray, creating a striking and cohesive decorative display. Each piece is signed or marked to the underside in hand painted gold with “Made in Japan.”

The set remains in very good overall condition, with only minor signs of age. The tray has some slight sun fading or blemishing in the areas where the individual pieces have stood over the years, consistent with its age and use.

An exceptionally stylish and characterful example of early 20th century Japanese lacquerware, combining fine craftsmanship, decorative appeal and an unusually playful cocktail theme.
