Victorian Folding Campaign Cutlery Set in Morocco Leather Case

19th century
For Sale by Pareglio & Ayres Antiques Interiors (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

This is a complete late nineteenth century Victorian three piece folding campaign cutlery set.

The set includes three matching utensils consisting of a folding knife, a folding fork, and a folding spoon. For practicality, the folding fork frame incorporates a folding steel corkscrew at the base. All three pieces are fitted with polished antique bone handle scales secured by brass pins. The scales are pale in colour, showing occasional dark flecks that identify the material as bone. The utensils are built on steel frames with strong internal folding springs. The spoon and fork feature a plated finish with a warm goldish tint from age and wear, while the knife retains its carbon steel blade.

For storage, the utensils slot directly into a separate leather inner sleeve. This sleeve slots directly inside the original clear, faceted rectangular spirit glass. The entire assembly then fits inside a rigid, two part maroon Morocco leather on card outer case, which is decorated on the front with three small stamped silver stars.

The set is in good, functional antique condition. The folding joints and springs remain tight and operational, and the glass is free from chips, cracks, or damage. The outer leather on card case and inner sleeve are structurally sound and close securely. The bone handles show a natural aged patina. There is a small, historic chip to the bone handle scale at the very top tip of the knife near the bolster pin, exposing the underlying brass liner, but this area is stable and does not impact the use of the knife.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Campaign cutlery refers to portable dining equipment specially designed for nineteenth-century military officers, explorers, and travellers. These sets featured folding or nesting utensils to minimise space during transport.

These sets were typically constructed from durable materials including cross-grained morocco leather cases, silver-plated or steel utensils, bone or horn handles, and blown glass beakers.

Authentic period pieces feature tailored leather cases, precise folding mechanisms, period maker marks or silver hallmarks, and age-appropriate wear to high-friction areas such as hinge points and leather linings.

Compact historical sets can be displayed open on a gentlemans library bookshelf, placed inside a glass cabinet, or arranged as a decorative curiosity on an office desk or side table.

Leather cases require careful dust removal with a soft dry cloth and periodic conditioning using specialist neutral leather wax. Keep metal components dry and store the set away from direct heat sources to prevent leather shrinkage.
