This eighteenth-century Italian side table takes the form of a rectangular walnut piece finished in a dark brown tone. It stands on turned legs connected by a low box stretcher and has a single frieze drawer fitted with a circular central handle. Brass studs line the overhanging top and border the frieze drawer, while small metal plaques accent the upper corners of the structural supports. Measuring 68.5 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this table suits placement at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library or study. The compact proportions provide surface space for a lamp or books while keeping a low profile against upholstery.

FAQs

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and finish drying.

In modern spaces, dark timber furniture creates depth when set against light neutral walls or textured plaster. Position the table next to contemporary upholstered seating or in a hallway to contrast structural historical design with modern minimalism.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-saw marks, irregular dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, natural shrinkage across wider timber surfaces, and wear on the lower stretchers consistent with centuries of foot placement.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid Italian walnut due to its dense grain and durability. Accents were fashioned using hand-forged iron or brass studs, with internal drawer linings often crafted from native hardwoods.

Italian Baroque furniture is recognised by its solid construction, rich dark timber such as walnut, bold turnings, and decorative brass or iron studs. Originating in the seventeenth century, these pieces emphasise architectural proportions and sturdy joinery.
