Imari chargers are large decorative porcelain display plates originating from the Arita region of Japan, historically exported to Europe through the port of Imari from the seventeenth century onwards.

Traditional Imari porcelain features a high-fired hard-paste porcelain body decorated with underglaze cobalt blue and painted overglaze enamels, typically in shades of iron-red, green, pink, and gold.

Authentic Meiji era Imari ware exhibits distinct hand-painted asymmetry, subtle variations in glaze thickness, deep cobalt blue underglaze, and evidence of hand-tooling or kiln spur marks on the underside.

An Imari charger can be displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard, positioned as a centrepiece on a mantelpiece, or securely wall-mounted within a gallery arrangement.

Clean Imari porcelain using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads or chemical solvents that could wear away overglaze enamels and gilded details.
