19th Century Period 2 Drawer Table in Original Paint C1850

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

From a large property in the Peak District we have a rather super mid 19th century 2 drawer pine table in its original paint with some great wear and aging in the right places. Of particular interest is the well turned legs - we just love them.

Pretty much untouched, the table is the perfect size for a period hallway or maybe to be utilised as a desk. We have genuine attractive wear with a pleasing faded speckled caramel tone to the “feathered” paint, both drawers are working as they should and the table sits well being ready for placing after a careful once over in our workshop. It’s likely the table would have had a little raised gallery, but long gone.

A super period piece of “feather” painted pine furniture English C1860.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th century country side tables are functional wooden pieces characterized by straightforward joinery, turned legs, and practical drawer storage. They were commonly crafted for domestic tasks, serving as writing desks, dressing tables, or utility surfaces in rural households.

Craftsmen typically utilised regional softwoods or hardwoods such as pine, oak, and elm, secured with mortise and tenon joints or hand-cut dovetails. Surfaces were frequently painted, stained, or faux-grained to protect the timber and imitate costlier hardwoods.

Authentic period finishes show natural wear patterns around handles, edges, and lower legs corresponding to decades of physical use. The surface often exhibits subtle crazing, layered paint history, and gentle micro-cracking rather than uniform modern distressing.

A Victorian side table functions effectively as a hallway console, a compact home office desk, or an accent piece in a living space. Pairing its aged timber texture with modern lighting or contemporary artwork creates a balanced visual contrast.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals or harsh water-based cleaners. Apply a light coat of clear natural beeswax once or twice a year to preserve the original finish without altering its natural patina.
