Regency Rosewood Fold Over Card Table Burr Yew Crossbanded Games Table C1815

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An elegant Regency rosewood fold-over card table dating from around 1815, retaining beautifully figured burr yew crossbanding and delicate line inlay throughout.

The hinged top opens to reveal the original baize-lined playing surface, making the table equally suitable as an occasional table or for use as a traditional games table. Raised on elegant Regency supports, it displays the restrained proportions and refined craftsmanship associated with the period.

The richly figured rosewood veneers and contrasting burr yew border create an especially attractive appearance, making this an excellent decorative piece even when closed.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 72.5cm

Width: 89.5cm

Depth (closed): 44cm

Depth (open): 88cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition.

There are marks, knocks and scratches consistent with over 200 years of age and use. The top has some historic water marks to the polish together with minor surface scratches and small losses to sections of the line inlay.

The table has a very slight movement and, as is common with antique fold-over card tables, the top does not sit perfectly flat when closed. The joints remain stable and both the hinged top and folding rear leg operate correctly.

Overall, a sound, attractive and usable Regency card table with honest age-related wear.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, a Regency fold-over card table is a piece of occasional furniture designed with a hinged top that opens to double its surface area, traditionally used for playing cards or board games.

Craftsmen during the Regency period frequently utilised exotic timber veneers such as rosewood and mahogany, often accented with burr yew or satinwood crossbanding and solid brass fittings.

Authentic Regency pieces feature period-accurate joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails and hand-turned fluted legs, along with natural timber oxidisation on the underside and interior frame.

When closed, these tables function as console tables in an entrance hall, landing, or behind a sofa, topped with a table lamp, books, or a decorative object.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer cracking or fading, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain.
