Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An ikebana basket, traditionally known as a hanakago, is a specialised woven vessel designed to display floral arrangements according to the principles of the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging. Originating in the Muromachi period and evolving significantly during the Meiji era, these baskets combine sculptural utility with master craft techniques.

Ikebana baskets are predominantly crafted from split bamboo species such as madake or moso, often complemented by rattan binding and dark natural lacquers or stains. Artisans utilise varied weaving methods, including plaiting, twining, and openwork knotting, to achieve structural balance and textural contrast.

Authentic antique examples often feature asymmetric or complex weaving patterns, hand-split bamboo with smooth aged nodes, and a deep natural patina gained from smoke exposure or long-term handling. Look for subtle maker signatures incised on the base alongside signs of traditional construction, such as bamboo root handles or intricate rattan lashings.

These vessels serve as striking sculptural centrepieces on a sideboard, console table, or display shelf, whether displayed empty to highlight their form or arranged with dried botanicals. Their rich organic tones and graphic silhouettes complement minimalist, Japandi, or eclectic interior schemes seamlessly.

Dust the basket regularly using a soft, dry brush or gently compressed air to clean within intricate weaves. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and excessive moisture to prevent the split bamboo strips from warping or cracking over time.
