Taxidermy – A fine Victorian dome containing eighteen South American birds.

In the manner of Ashmead of London. Unlabelled. Circa 1880. Complete with its original glass shade and ebonised base.

56.5 cm High.

Amongst the five hummingbirds is my particular favourite, a Tufted Coquette which is modelled with its neck feathers in full display.

I believe the eighteen birds (roughly in order from the base to the top of the dome) are:

1. Blue-gray Tanager (Thraupis episcopus).

2. American Redstart(Setophaga ruticilla).

3. Blue Dacnis or Turquoise Honeycreeper

4. Golden-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala).

5. Summer Tanager(Piranga rubra).

6. Speckled Tanager (Ixothraupis guttata).

7. Thick-billed Euphonia (Euphonia laniirostris).

8. Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster).

9. Golden-olive Woodpecker (Colaptes rubiginosus).

10.Female Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri)

11. Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus).

12. White-tailed Sabrewing (Campylopterus ensipennis).

13. Blue-headed Hummingbird (Riccordia bicolor)

14. Broad-billed Hummingbird (Cynanthus latirostris).

15. Tufted coquette (Lophornis ornatus).

16. Green Hermit (Phaethornis guy).
