Elegantly proportioned and finely crafted, this late Qing Dynasty hardwood altar table dates to the latter part of the 19th century, circa 1880. Displaying the restrained sophistication characteristic of scholar’s furniture, the table combines refined architectural form with subtle yet highly accomplished carved ornamentation.

The rectangular floating-panel top is framed by a mitred border, above a narrow waist carved with an uninterrupted openwork frieze of stylised interlocking ruyi cloud motifs. The apron continues seamlessly around each end, demonstrating the precision and balance of traditional Chinese joinery. The square-section legs terminate in gently rounded feet and are joined by elegant open rectangular stretchers, lending the piece both visual lightness and structural strength. Decorative relief-carved motifs at the leg brackets and feet provide understated embellishment without detracting from the table’s clean, harmonious lines.

Constructed from a dense, dark-toned hardwood—most likely hongmu—the table possesses a rich patina developed over more than a century, with a deep lustrous finish that enhances the natural grain of the timber. The quality of the carving and the crisp execution of the joinery reflect the work of an accomplished workshop producing furniture for a refined domestic interior.

Altar tables such as this occupied an important place within the Chinese home, serving as focal points for ancestral tablets, incense burners, scholar’s objects, ceramics, or prized works of art.
