FAQs

A kiseruzutsu is a traditional Japanese pipe case designed to hold a kiseru, a traditional smoking pipe. Popular during the Edo and Meiji periods, these containers were worn suspended from the obi sash as functional accessories known as sagemono.

Craftsmen used finely woven split bamboo, carved timber, horn, and lacquered wood for the body of the pipe case, often complemented by metal mounts made from silver or alloy. Attached pouches were frequently constructed from woven silk brocade, embroidered textiles, or leather.

Authentic historic pieces exhibit extremely fine, tight weave patterns in the bamboo, natural patination from age and handling, and refined metal fittings. Hand-carved or hand-woven details show subtle variations rather than modern machine uniformity.
