Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Meiji period smoking ensemble, or tabako-ire set, traditionally comprises a fabric or leather pouch for tobacco, a carved pipe case (kiseruzutsu) for holding a pipe, and a cord fitted with an ojime bead to secure the components together. Popularised in Japan during the Edo and Meiji eras, these portable accessories served practical functions while acting as personal displays of status and craftsmanship.

These ensembles were crafted using a combination of fine textiles such as woven silk, embossed leather, and brocade for the pouch, alongside carved wood, bamboo, bone, or lacquer for the pipe case. Metalwork clasps (kanemono) and carved ojime beads made of metal, stone, or organic materials were also key structural and decorative components.

Authentic Meiji period pieces display signs of hand craftsmanship, including fine hand-stitching on textiles, relief carving on the pipe case, and detailed metalwork on the pouch clasp. Look for natural age-related patina on the carved surfaces and historical wear around cord attachment points rather than uniform machine production.

An antique smoking ensemble can be displayed inside a glass shadow box or presented on a minimalist wooden tray on a bookshelf or desk. Displaying the piece alongside contemporary ceramics or monochromatic artwork highlights the intricate textures and historical craftsmanship of the ensemble.

Keep the set away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent silk fading, wood warping, or lacquer damage. Gently dust the carved surfaces with a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical polishes on the textiles and patinated metalwork.
