A Georgian Drop Leaf Mahogany Pembroke Table, Shaped Apron C1790-1820

18th century
Description

A Georgian Drop Leaf Mahogany Pembroke Table, Shaped Apron C1790-1820.

A fine quality English drop leaf Pembroke table circa 1780-1820 with evidence of a well constructed cabinet makers and design detail.

A mahogany Pembroke table of elegant proportions and original timeworn patina, featuring a rosewood crossbanded top with satinwood and ebony stringing, measuring 89cm length and 49cm wide, widening to create a 89cm square top over a single oak lined drawer with brass swan neck handle to 1 end and dummy drawer with matching handle to the opposite side.

The table stands well upon reeded, square tapering legs with no wobbles or evidence of significant repairs or loss. We are putting this through our workshop for minimal cosmetic conservation and even wax polish and address any loose veneers to the edges whilst retaining its excellent patination.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the mid-to-late eighteenth century, a Pembroke table is a compact drop-leaf table designed for light dining, writing, or tea service, characterized by two rectangular or rounded hinged flaps.

Craftsmen predominantly utilized solid and veneered mahogany, frequently featuring pine or oak secondary woods for internal drawer linings and internal framework.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate timber oxidisation on unpolished undersides, original brass rule hinges or wooden support fly-brackets, and hand-planed surfaces.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa as an accent piece, using the extendable leaves to accommodate table lamps or books, or place it in a hallway with the flaps folded.

Maintain the original patina by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct heat sources and sunlight.
