Early 18th Century Pair of English Yew & Fruitwood Wig Stands, Circa 1730
A remarkably rare true pair of early 18th century English wig stands, dating to circa 1730, beautifully hand turned in a striking combination of yew and fruitwood.
Each stand features an intricately turned fruitwood base supporting an elegantly shaped yew wood column, crisply executed in a complex baluster design. The stands are finished with finely turned, domed fruitwood tops, designed to support and preserve the shape of the powdered wigs that were an essential symbol of status and fashion among the aristocracy and the affluent during the Georgian period.
True pairs of wig stands from this period are exceptionally scarce, with examples in beautifully figured yew wood being particularly desirable. Over nearly three centuries, the timber has acquired a rich, warm patina, enhanced by a traditional waxed finish that beautifully highlights the natural colour and grain.
Equally appealing as decorative ob
