A Magnificent Pair of Chamberlain Worcester Ice Pails in Pattern 240 C.1800 - 1810

18th century
Description

A magnificent and large pair of Chamberlain Worcester ice pails, covers and liners, c1800-10. Of generous size, the urn forms applied with gilt mermaid handles, supported on the tails of three dolphins, the triform bases with shell corners, the covers with coiled dolphin finials, richly decorated in the 'Fine Old Japan' pattern number 240, the Imari design highlighted in gold, 36cm high.

Condition: Professional restoration to both lids and one handle.

Chamberlain's pattern number 240 became much associated with Nelson, after he chose this pattern when he visited the factory with William and Emma Hamilton in tow in August 1802. His subsequent order became known as the 'Horatia' service, as listed in the Merton or 'Trickey' inventory of circa 1813. The original Chamberlain order lists Nelson's breakfast set in detail, see lot 500 in this sale for a breakfast cup from that service owned by Nelson and Emma. Written at the bottom of Nelson's order form '1 complete dinner service and 1 complete desert [sic] with ice pails' are mentioned. The dinner and dessert services were never put into production so, sadly, no 'Horatia' service ice pails ever existed. If Nelson had escaped his fate and lived at Trafalgar then he might have expected something as grand as the present lot, complete with his own crest and insignia.

This pair of Georgian Chamberlain Worcester ice pails, covers and liners date from c1800 to 1810. Each urn-shaped vessel uses porcelain, enamel and gold leaf, decorated in a traditional Imari pattern using gold, orange and blue. The design includes applied gilt mermaid handles, pierced collars, and covers topped with coiled dolphin finials. The bodies rest on the tails of three gilded dolphins above triform bases with shell corners. Professional restoration is present on both lids and one handle. Each piece measures 36 cm high. In a modern interior, these decorative ice pails sit on a sideboard top as a striking focal point, bringing a sense of classical luxury and refined historic design to a dining room or formal reception space.

Ice pails, also known as glacieres, were multi-part ceramic vessels produced during the late 18th and early 19th centuries to keep chilled desserts or wine cold at formal dining tables.

These vessels were crafted from bone china or soft-paste ceramic, decorated with overglaze enamels and mercury gilding, and featured separate internal liners to hold ice apart from food or bottles.

Authentic pieces from the Regency period feature fine hand-painted enamelling, distinctive Imari patterns, heavy gilding, and occasionally painted factory pattern numbers or marks on the base.

Position a pair symmetrically on a dining room sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantel to serve as dramatic sculptural focal points.

Dust gently with a clean microfibre cloth or dry soft brush, avoiding water immersion or abrasive chemical cleansers that can wear down original surface gilding.
