This Gothic Revival pendant is a large sterling silver crucifix from 1920, measuring H: 3 1/4" by W: 2 1/4". It incorporates a bright silver finish combined with dark black stone rectangular panels set into the vertical and horizontal arms. A central square junction displays sparkling marcasite stones, matching the textured marcasite detailing on the hanging bale at the top. At each of the four extreme points, claw-set red garnet stone clusters form triangular terminals that contrast against the dark background. The solid construction shows clean edges and a polished framework holding the various inlaid elements securely in place. It makes a striking personal ornament for wear on a chain today, reflecting traditional ecclesiastical design sensibilities through its combination of precious metals and contrasting coloured gems.

Marcasite jewellery gained prominent popularity during the Victorian era and the Art Deco movement as an accessible alternative to cut diamonds, frequently crafted into religious iconography including cross pendants.

These pendants are primarily constructed from sterling silver set with faceted iron pyrite stones, often combined with onyx inlays, enamel, or red garnet accents at the cross terminals.

Authentic sterling silver pieces feature official purity marks such as 925 or regional assay hallmarks, alongside bead-set or prong-set marcasite stones rather than surface-glued imitations.

A marcasite cross pendant is traditionally worn on a silver chain to add textured detail to monochrome tailoring, or layered with minimal chain necklaces for a contemporary look.

Clean silver marcasite items gently using a dry silver-polishing cloth, avoiding water immersion, liquid chemical cleaners, or ultrasonic devices that can loosen delicate stone settings.
