Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Fine network of glaze crazing: natural age shrinkage of the lead glaze.
Flaking to the black painted hair: typical wear on Victorian overglaze colours.
Unglazed foot rim with ingrained grime: decades of standing on surfaces.
Central vent hole inside hollow lid: traditional mid-Victorian slip-moulding technique.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 19th-century Victorian Staffordshire earthenware tobacco jar and cover is formed from a glazed ceramic body decorated in multicoloured pigments. The two-piece construction comprises a barrel-shaped base inscribed with the word TOBACCO inside a raised cartouche, set beneath a lid modelled as a seated Pierrot clown wearing a green cap and a ruffled collar, with a child perched on his right shoulder holding a cup. Fine craquelure glaze covers the surfaces, showing visible age lines across the figures and the barrel body, alongside painted floral motifs on the Pierrot's white tunic and alternating vertical stripes of red, yellow, and brown on the barrel and purple-striped trousers. Measuring 34 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep overall, the piece functions as an ornamental storage container. Display this lidded jar on a mantelpiece or a living room shelf as a decorative Victorian collectible. The compact footprint fits easily onto side tables, bookcases, or display cabinets while offering functional storage for small items. The colourful ceramic finish adds character to traditional and eclectic interiors alike, bringing nineteenth-century English pottery craftsmanship into daily view. Maintenance involves gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to protect the antique glaze and painted details.

Staffordshire potteries produced figural earthenware tobacco jars throughout the 19th century in England. These containers featured whimsical characters, classical figures, or theatrical themes such as Pierrot from the Commedia dellarte, serving as both functional vessels and decorative mantelpieces.

These jars were typically press-moulded from earthenware body clay and coated in a clear lead glaze. Hand-painted enamel colours and underglaze slip decoration were applied before a firing process to achieve bright, durable finishes.

Authentic pieces generally feature unglazed bases or simple foot rims, subtle press-mould seam lines, and age-appropriate glaze crazing. Victorian examples are frequently unmarked by manufacturer stamps and exhibit hand-painted polychrome decoration.

Figural ceramic jars serve as striking decorative accents on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or curated coffee tables. They complement dark academia, maximalist, or vintage-eclectic room schemes when paired with antique books and brass decorative objects.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid submerging earthenware in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as moisture can penetrate glazed craquelure lines and weaken the ceramic substrate.
