A 17th Century Antique Dutch Delft Tile, Hand Painted Swan Motif 13cm.

A single antique earthenware, tin glaze Dutch Delftware tile with a rare hand painted swan central motif theme, with an outer geometric decoration in mostly excellent condition for its age, whilst no cracks and only minimal nibbles to some edges which show it’s yellowish earthenware porcelain, helping to authenticate.

A charming antique tile featuring the rare swan central subject and other usual hand painted motifs and themes with a traditional tin-glaze, a technique that went in to producing these desirable tiles, a charming example, circa 1650, TBV.

FAQs

Dutch Delft tiles emerged in the late 16th and 17th centuries in the Netherlands, influenced by Chinese porcelain imported by the Dutch East India Company. Local potters developed tin-glazed earthenware ceramics decorated with blue cobalt oxides to mimic imported wares, producing functional wall coverings for Dutch homes.

These tiles were manufactured from local clay pressed into wooden square moulds, fired once, and dipped in an opaque white tin glaze. Artisans then hand-painted designs directly onto the unfired glaze using metallic oxides, such as cobalt blue, before a second high-temperature firing fused the glaze and pigments.

Authentic period tiles typically feature pinholes in the corners from nail-boards used during cutting, a thick red or buff clay body, fine surface crazing, and minor edge chipping. The hand-painted decorations display slight brushwork variations and depth of colour that modern reproduction processes cannot replicate.

Individual historic tiles can be displayed on brass stands, mounted in custom shadow-box frames, or incorporated into contemporary tiled splashbacks and fireplace surrounds as focal accents alongside modern materials.

Clean gently using a soft, non-abrasive dry cloth or a slightly dampened cotton swab with distilled water. Avoid harsh chemical detergents, immersion in water, or abrasive tools, as moisture can enter cracks in the glaze and cause sub-surface degradation.
