Description

I have not seen this form of lemon squeezer before...it is made out of Sycamore and is in the form of a falcon, complete with its own falconary hood to cover the eyes (which is the shaped toleware hinge)....it has a bold shape with "hook" double beaks and carved wings...excellent colour and is in original working condition....would make a fine addition to any serious collection of treen.

Continental. C1840-60.

Treen refers to small domestic wooden objects crafted prior to the widespread adoption of metals and plastics. In the 19th century, items such as citrus squeezers were frequently carved by hand from dense hardwoods like sycamore or boxwood.

Sycamore is a dense, close-grained hardwood that does not impart taste, odour, or resin into food products. Its durability and smooth texture made it ideal for kitchen tools, including fruit presses and butter moulds.

Authentic pieces feature indications of hand-carving, original metal hinges, natural wear inside the crushing cavity, and a deep patina formed through historic handling and age.

These decorative objects work well displayed on open kitchen shelving, mantelpieces, or inside glazed cabinets, adding organic texture and historical context to contemporary spaces.

Avoid immersing wooden items in water or exposing them to high moisture. Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth and maintain the surface with a light application of food-safe beeswax polish.
