Rare Regency Painted Tambourine

19th century
Description

This is a lovely regency red painted tambourine. The tambourine became popular among young ladies of the era. The red colour reminds me of coasters of the period as does the gold decoration. I think the vellum top may be a replacement but what is lovely is that there is the remainder of the map on the reverse of the vellum. Great condition and makes a really good sound.

Diameter 25.5 cm

Depth 5 cm

Declaration

Digby Antiques (Wiltshire) has dated this Regency Painted Wooden Tambourine to the Regency era.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the British Regency era (circa 18111820), musical instruments were frequently designed as social parlor pieces and decorative objects. They often featured hand-painted botanical motifs, gilding, and lacquer work influenced by Neoclassical and Chinoiserie styles.

Traditional construction involved a bent wooden frame, natural calfskin or sheepskin vellum, metal jingles (typically brass or iron), and decorative brass studs to secure the stretched skin to the wooden rim.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-hammered or cast metal jingles, irregular hand-painted brushwork, natural shrinkage or patination on the vellum skin, and hand-driven brass studs along the frame circumference.

An antique tambourine functions well as a decorative tabletop object, styled flat or propped on an easel within a bookshelf, on a piano top, or integrated into a curated vignette of historical objects.

Keep the item in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and moisture, as extreme humidity fluctuations cause vellum to warp or split. Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush and avoid liquid cleaners.
