Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

FAQs

During the Georgian era in 18th-century Britain, card tables became essential items of social furniture as parlour card games grew in popularity among the upper classes. Craftsmen designed them with hinged tops that folded flat against walls when not in use, doubling as decorative console tables.

High-grade dense mahogany was the primary wood used during this period, often featuring flame veneer top surfaces. The internal folding frames utilized oak or pine, with cast brass hinges securing the double-leaf top mechanism.

Authentic period card tables display hand-cut dovetail joinery, original iron or brass stop-hinges, and evidence of hand-planed timber on the undersides. Look for rear legs that operate on an internal wooden concertina or gate-leg mechanism to support the opened top surface.

Position them closed as symmetrical console tables in a hallway or flanking a doorway to present clean neoclassic lines. They can also be opened during gatherings to serve as functional gaming or side tables.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually to protect the original patination. Keep the tables away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading.
