This Victorian games table is a piece from circa 1860, styled for a gentleman's library and fashioned from dark brown rosewood. The design incorporates a serpentine fold-over top, a heavily turned and carved central pedestal, sub-frieze foliage carving, and four scroll feet fitted with castors. The timber displays a polished finish with rich natural grain variations throughout the structure. The piece stands 73 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, expanding to a square surface when opened. In a modern interior, this item functions well as a side table beside the front door or in a study, providing a compact surface area for display or occasional use.

During the Victorian era, parlour games and card playing were central social activities within middle and upper-class households. Tables were engineered specifically for this purpose, featuring space-saving fold-over tops and interior compartments for playing pieces.

These tables were commonly crafted using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany over solid timber frames. Construction featured hand-cut joinery, turned and carved central pedestals, and internal baize playing surfaces.

Authentic mid-19th-century pieces display period-correct construction markers such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors, hand-carved pedestal detail, and age-related wear or oxidisation to the underside of the timber.

When closed, the table serves as a hallway console or sofa table. Placing a contemporary lamp, ceramic vase, or framed artwork on top integrates the period wood tone into modern design schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture to prevent veneer lifting or warping.
