Originating in the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries, Delft tiles became widely produced throughout the 18th century as decorative tin-glazed earthenware inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

These tiles were formed from clay, fired once, coated with an opaque white tin glaze, hand-painted using metal oxides such as cobalt blue, and subjected to a second kiln firing.

Authentic examples feature a thick clay body, corner pinholes from wooden mounting boards used during cutting, subtle hand-painted variations, and fine glaze crazing.

Individual tiles can be displayed on a small easel mount, set into custom framing as wall art, or positioned on a mantelpiece alongside modern ceramics.

Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical cleaners or soaking in water, as liquid can enter micro-cracks in the glaze and damage the earthenware substrate.
