This George III oak tilt-top occasional table belongs to the Georgian period and follows an English Country House design style. The piece exhibits a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish across its circular top. Supported by a tripod base, the structure incorporates cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, alongside a central turned column featuring ring mouldings. The item stands 72 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 88 cm deep. Suitable for placement in an empty corner of a living room or study, the table provides a functional surface for lamps or decorative items while maintaining traditional character. The tilt-top mechanism allows the surface to pivot vertically for compact storage when not in use. The timber displays natural grain patterns across the circular top panel, complementing the turned and carved sections of the central stem and supporting legs.

FAQs

A George III tilt-top table is an 18th-century British occasional table featuring a hinged circular or rectangular top that tilts vertically on a catch mechanism, allowing the table to be stored flush against a wall when not in use.

Georgian tripod tables were predominantly crafted from solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-turned central columns, dovetail-jointed blocks, and legs hand-doweled into a central pillar.

Authentic period pieces display original brass or iron tilt latches, hand-planed underside surfaces, irregular shrinkage to the circular top over time, and hand-cut timber joints around the pillar junction.

Position the table beside an armchair as a lamp stand or in an entrance hall, pairing the natural wood grain with modern ceramics or minimalist brass table lamps to balance historic detail with clean lines.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax every six months, avoiding direct sunlight, radiators, and wet items to protect the wood grain.
