Description

A hand painted wooden dumb waiter in the form of a British officer of the 33rd Regiment of Foot of 1854. Dumb waiters are not that unusual but a rarely seen in the form of soldiers, and to have a named regiment is more unusual. It is reminiscent of of the work of E V Howell and probably by a soldier (similar to Howell) who painted wooden figures in the post First World War period. The figure dates to around the 1920s. The tray has been replaced, otherwise he remains in original condition. The figure is heavy with a metal plate attached to the wooden base (original to the piece) to weight the figure down and retain balance.
