FAQs

Masons ironstone is a patented type of heavy earthenware developed in early 19th-century England by Miles Mason, designed to be a durable and affordable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain.

Ironstone is crafted from a mixture of clay, feldspar, china stone, and flint, fired at high temperatures to achieve a dense, durable body, often finished with transfer-printed designs and hand-painted polychrome details.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed or printed factory backstamps, characteristic heavy weight, crazing in the glaze consistent with age, and hand-applied enamel highlights over transfer-printed motifs.

These platters can be mounted on walls as decorative art, displayed upright on plate racks, or used as centrepieces on dining tables and sideboards to introduce historic character and pattern.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand using mild detergent and warm water, avoiding abrasive sponges, ultrasonic cleaners, and dishwashers to protect the historic glaze and delicate hand-painted enamels.
