Black basalt ware was developed by English potters during the mid-18th century as a fine-grained, unglazed black stoneware inspired by ancient Etruscan and Roman pottery.

The ceramic body consists of dense stoneware clay infused with iron oxide and manganese oxides to achieve a solid black colour throughout the vessel.

Look for crisp engine-turned fluting, sharp detail on moulded finials and handles, a smooth velvet-like matte texture, and impressed maker marks such as Spode on the underside.

Display this style of ceramic as a sculptural accent on a dark wood sideboard, inside a glazed library cabinet, or alongside modern minimalist stone objects.

Wash gently using warm water and a soft microfibre cloth while avoiding abrasive scrubbers or chemical cleaners that might compromise the matte surface finish.
