Derby Porcelain Recumbent Stag Figure Patch Period C.1760

Description

A Derby porcelain figure of a recumbent stag, produced during the Patch period, circa 1759-1769. The figure is of small scale and represents one of the early animal models that defined Derby production in the mid-18th century.

The model corresponds to “Stag and Doe at Lodge” (E99), as recorded in Bradshaw, with the present example closely matching the documented size. The compact proportions are typical of early production rather than later enlarged versions.

The modelling shows the characteristic early Derby approach, with expressive yet slightly simplified anatomy, softly applied enamels, and a densely applied bocage. The base is left rough beneath, with a vent hole and visible patch marks, consistent with early manufacture.

Produced roughly between 1756 and 1770, Patch Period Derby porcelain figures are known for three or four dark, unglazed circular pad marks on their bases caused by clay pads used to elevate pieces during kiln firing.

These items were crafted from soft-paste porcelain clay bodies, decorated with hand-applied enamel pigments, and finished with a translucent lead glaze.
