Royal Dux Monumental Porcelain Figure of a Graceful Maiden, Early 20th Century

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A striking monumental porcelain figure by Royal Dux, representing a graceful young woman with a wrapped bouquet of roses, made in the early 20th century. With its 79 cm height and elegant vertical composition, the piece has the presence of an interior sculpture rather than a conventional mantel or cabinet ornament.

The softly flowing drapery, restrained palette and poised gesture give it the refined decorative character for which large Royal Dux figures are especially admired.

This model belongs to the Royal Dux tradition of Art Nouveau maidens, where feminine beauty is expressed through flowing lines, floral symbolism and controlled movement. The figure is especially appealing for the crispness of its modelling: the face is clearly defined, the hands and feet remain carefully articulated, and the folds retain their clarity.

While some Royal Dux figures display softened detail from long-used moulds, the modelling here remains notably crisp, giving the sculpture a particularly refined presence.

Figures of this scale rarely survive so well, and their scarcity on the market has helped support growing collector and decorative interest over time.

The underside bears the applied pink triangular mark reading “Royal Dux Bohemia” together with the impressed model number 1700.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau porcelain figures are characterised by organic forms, sinuous flowing lines, and themes inspired by nature and classical mythology, popularised between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Royal Dux production typically utilised soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain, often finished with a matte glaze, hand-painted polychrome enamels, and subtle gilding.

Authentic pieces feature the trademark raised pink porcelain triangle pad on the base, often impressed with the letter E and model numbers, alongside distinct factory backstamps.

Large porcelain figures work best as focal points on dark wood sideboards, consoles, or mantelpieces, paired with modern minimal accents to accentuate their sculpted silhouette.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush or cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or water immersion which can damage unglazed porcelain and gilding.
