Every so often a spectacular case of taxidermy comes up for sale, this is such an example.
Alfred Thomas trained at Williams of Dublin and later set up his own taxidermy workshops in Gloucester around the turn of the 19th Century, sometime after the first world war he moved to Cardiff as taxidermist to the national museum of Wales.
This is no exception.
It is interesting to note that this case contains two signed shells, the one in the right corner (dated Sept 1st 1902, the other in the left corner, both giving his address as ‘9 College Street Gloucester’ making this one of his earliest cases in his own right.

Alfred Thomas’s taxidermy shop premises at ‘9 College Street’ still stands today, a beautiful black and white half-timbered building’ situated off Westgate Street. It was in 1894 that Beatrix Potter visited the tailors shop at number 45 Westgate street, and based her famous book “The tailor of Gloucester” which was published in 1903. Today on the next street at ‘9 College Court’ is Beatrix Potter’s ‘The house of the tailor of Gloucester Museum’.
