Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Anglo-Indian furniture emerged during the British colonial period in India, blending Western furniture forms, such as Victorian and Regency styles, with traditional Indian craftsmanship. Local artisans produced pieces using native timbers, incorporating decorative techniques such as relief carving and mother-of-pearl or ivory inlay for export and local colonial residences.

These tables were typically constructed from dense local hardwoods, primarily Indian rosewood (teak or shisham), chosen for their dark grain and stability. The decorative contrast was achieved using hand-cut mother-of-pearl (nacre), bone, or ivory, secured into pre-carved recesses on the wooden surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-cut joinery, hand-carved turned pedestals, and slight irregularities in the hand-cut shell inlay. Natural age indications include gentle oxidisation of the timber, minor shrinkage lines in the solid wood, and historical wear on the triform base and feet.

An Anglo-Indian pedestal table serves as a focal point in a hallway, foyer, or bay window. Pair it with neutral contemporary seating or minimalist decor to highlight the contrast between the dark timber, mother-of-pearl detail, and modern architectural lines.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent the wood from expanding and loosening the inlay. Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, and apply a light coating of natural beeswax to the timber while avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that could harm the shell.
