Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This large Victorian Staffordshire earthenware footbath displays a bellied, oval form with twin integrated handles and an oval pedestal base. The white glazed ceramic surface carries a blue transferware decoration of a lattice pattern composed of dog roses and thorny vines. Additional visual elements include the distinct blue and white colour scheme of the floral transfer print, the curved loop shape of the side handles, and the smooth raised band wrapping the base. The footbath measures 22 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. Positioned atop a sideboard in an English country house interior, this piece serves well as a wine cooler or a container for floral displays filled with dried green hydrangeas. The construction consists of a glazed ceramic body shaped into a traditional footbath silhouette, maintaining a clean presentation without chips or cracks.

FAQs

Popular in nineteenth-century households, ceramic footbaths were utilitarian vessels designed for personal hygiene, soaking feet, and therapeutic treatments prior to the widespread installation of modern indoor plumbing.

These pieces were typically crafted from glazed earthenware or ironstone pottery, decorated using copper-plate tissue transfer printing of cobalt blue underglaze patterns.

Authentic period examples often feature printed or impressed maker marks on the underside, slight glaze crazing, weight consistent with dense earthenware, and subtle hand-applied transfer seams.

While no longer used for personal hygiene, these large vessels function effectively as decorative planters, wine coolers for entertaining, or focal centrepieces filled with botanicals.

Wash gently by hand using warm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, or submersion for extended periods to prevent damage to the glaze and earthenware body.
