A plaster column pedestal, circa 1880, after the Antique, attributed to Domenico Brucciani & Co London, stamped ‘2833’.

Domenico Brucciani & Co. (1882-1906) was a business set up by Joseph L. Caproni at 148 Grays Inn Road as a continuation of the modelling, plaster cast and teaching work carried out by Domenico Brucciani (1815-1880). Domenico was born in Lucca, Italy, and set up business in London, establishing a Gallery of Casts in Covent Garden by 1837. His business built up links with both the British Museum and the South Kensington Museum.

Grand Tour plaster pedestals are decorative architectural display stands produced primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by classical Greek and Roman ruins visited by European travellers, these casts replicated classical column orders such as Ionic or Corinthian to support sculptures and decorative objects.

These pedestals were crafted using plaster of Paris poured into multi-piece moulds, often reinforced internally with timber, iron armatures, or hessian fibre to provide structural stability. The finished surfaces were treated with thin gesso coatings or paint washes to create a uniform finish.

Authentic period plaster casts typically exhibit subtle seam lines from historical piece-moulding techniques, natural tonal patination on unsealed areas, and classical proportions derived from ancient architectural models. Impressed maker stamps or inventory marks from casting workshops may also appear on the base or capital.
