Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Martin Murray Antiques

A fine oak table with bold turned supports, the front frieze carved with stylised running foliate design with a central initials of IWM and the date of 1687. This is likely to be a wedding date, the W being central and higher would be the surname. The rear and side friezes have a simple scratch moulding. The top is constructed from two wide boards with a narrow central board, the ends are cleated. The piece has a wonderful surface with a natural, graduated patina. The condition is very good with all original foot rails, It is of a good size and useable for dining or as a serving or console table.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find pieces of furniture from this period that have not had some form of re-finishing or adaptation. This is a rare example of a dated piece with a regional association in unadulterated condition.

This remarkable table has remained in the same family for generations and possibly from the time of it’s manufacture,

England. Westmorland dated 1687...
