Wally dugs are ceramic spaniel figures traditionally manufactured in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century and exported to Scotland, where they became a staple of Victorian mantelpiece decor.

They were typically fashioned from earthenware clay, hand-painted with underglaze colours, and finished with a clear lead glaze before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, hand-painted facial details with individual brush strokes, heavier earthenware bases, and sometimes vent holes characteristic of period manufacturing.

They make striking focal points when placed symmetrically on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, adding a touch of traditional character and colour to eclectic or classic rooms.

Dust them gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or submerging them in water to protect the aged glaze and delicate painted surfaces.
