This is a rare 19th century box frame of extremely fine quality in the most excellent condition dating from the Victorian era circa 1880. These box frames were expensive fine quality pieces so are rarely seen on the market. The rosewood outer case is velvet lined with a curved cushion interior that holds the gilded gesso frame. The ornate detail of the gilded gesso is extremely fine and crisp having been protected behind glass for over 150 years. It has a watered red silk reverse.This is one of 12 that we currently have listed from a good collection of Victorian frames all in perfect condition.They include images on porcelain and also images highlighted in paint etc. The photographs carry the signature for the renowned G T Jones Photographers, Kingsway, Surbiton, who had the patronage of HRH The Queen as well as other royals (see last photo).
