A Scale Model of a Hanson Cab from the Early 19th Century

1900 - 1920
Description

Circa 1920, this fine and very well accomplished scratch built model is very pleasing to the eye with its exceptional detail, good scale and bright, crisp paintwork.

It represents an early 19th-century Hanson cab, originally designed by Joseph Hanson in 1834. These lightweight and very manoeuvrable small carriages were very staple and nimble and only required a single horse. These elements greatly reduced the cost of such personal transport, making these cabs very popular in London and the larger towns and cities throughout the 19th century.

The model is predominantly wood and metal. It has real glass windows, padded leather seating, and leather rims on the wheels.

The passengers sat with a good degree of comfort and shelter, but still partially open to the elements at the upper front. While the driver sat high up at the back with no shelter.

This wonderful model is fitted with accurate spring suspension and wonderfully detailed lift out oil lamps, and a separate whip. It has hinged doors and an opening roof hatch. The paintwork is very neatly done in mustard and black with pin line detailing.

This fine model is a rare and lovely example in very good condition, and it would be a pleasing addition to any collection or home.

Maximum height including the whip in position: 30cm x width 40cm x depth 19cm

English, circa 1920

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Patented in 1834 by Joseph Hansom, the Hansom cab was a two-wheeled, horse-drawn vehicle designed for speed and safety. It became the dominant form of public taxicab in 19th-century British cities, renowned for its low centre of gravity and agility in urban traffic.

Carriage scale models were predominantly built using hardwood for the bodywork and shafts, along with miniature iron or brass fittings for lamps, axles, and wheel rims. Glass inserts were occasionally utilised for cab windows, while painted lacquer finishes provided weather protection.

Authentic period models demonstrate hand-crafted construction techniques, such as hand-cut joinery, hand-painted detailing, and period-appropriate metal hardware. Natural oxidisation on metal components and craquelure within painted timber surfaces also indicate historical age.

A scale transport model functions well as a focal accent on a library shelf, desk, or sideboard. Displaying it alongside framed historical maps, brass instruments, or dark timber joinery creates an engaging thematic focal point.

Dust the model periodically using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent dirt accumulation in delicate crevices. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents, and keep the object away from direct sunlight and humid environments to prevent wood warping or paint flaking.
