Fine Inlaid Mahogany Writing Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely proportioned mahogany writing or console table of elegant Georgian-inspired design, distinguished by its gently serpentine front and refined decorative detailing throughout. The rectangular top is beautifully veneered in richly figured mahogany, displaying a warm, even patina and subtle grain movement, and is finished with a delicately moulded edge.

Below, the shaped frieze is fitted with three drawers, each veneered in carefully selected mahogany arranged to create a striking flame pattern. The drawers are outlined with fine line inlay and retain their original-style circular brass ring handles with beaded surrounds. The frieze is further enriched by satinwood fan inlays to the corners, adding a restrained yet elegant decorative accent.

The table stands on tapered, fluted legs, crisply turned at the top and terminating in gently curved feet, lending the piece a light and graceful stance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Writing tables with serpentine fronts gained prominence in Britain during the mid-to-late eighteenth century, heavily influenced by cabinetmakers like Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton. The curved, undulating front was designed to add architectural interest while maintaining functional surface space for correspondence.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or oak frameworks, faced with high-grade mahogany or flame veneers. Inlays often incorporated contrasting timbers such as satinwood, boxwood, and ebony, while internal drawer linings were constructed from oak or pine with cast brass handles.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, uneven hand-sawn secondary timber on the undersides, and natural shrinkage marks around the veneer edges. Original cast brass hardware will show subtle hand-finished variations rather than uniform modern machine moulding.

An antique writing table can serve as a functional workstation in a modern study, a focal entry table in a hallway, or a dressing table in a master bedroom. Position the piece against a clean wall with contemporary artwork above it to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

To preserve the finish and inlay, keep the table away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood timber moisture and prevent veneer lifting.
