Samuel Alcock and Co. apothecary jar and cover, ‘HONEY’, c. 1840. The baluster shaped jar, having twin scroll handles, and reeded moulding, within green and gilt borders.
 
Titled HONEY in gilt, to a scroll, within a shell and mantle motif.
 
Having the original cover, surmounted with a reeded bud finial.
 
Height – 29 cm, 11 1/2”.
 
Condition – Firing crack and small chip to the inner rim of the jar, typical slight wear to the glaze – please see images for detail. No restoration.
 
The medicinal qualities of Honey have been recognised since ancient times, with records detailing its application for various conditions to be found in Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman texts.
