A mid 19th century mahogany writing table of small scale and light proportions, featuring a rectangular top with raised gallery over a single long frieze drawer, all raised on ring-turned legs.

Well suited as an occasional writing table in a living space or bedroom, or as a compact everyday desk in a study where space is limited. Its scale also allows it to function comfortably as a side table or hall table.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear and small losses to the inlay consistent with age and use. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

Victorian writing tables span from 1837 to 1901, often drawing inspiration from earlier Georgian and Regency proportions while incorporating heavier proportions and distinct turned or fluted legs.

These tables typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak, complemented by solid brass hardware and hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage consistent with age, patination on the brass fittings, and secondary woods appropriate to the nineteenth century.

An antique writing table serves as a functional workspace or an accent piece in a living room, contrasting effectively against contemporary neutral walls and minimalist seating.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and nourish the timber periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
