Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, predominantly during the 19th century. They were created using press-moulds and decorated with enamel paints to portray animals, famous personalities, and narrative scenes for Victorian homes.

These figures were cast from lead-glazed earthenware clay using multi-part press moulds. Tree stumps were frequently incorporated into slender animal designs to act as structural supports during the kiln firing process.

Authentic Victorian pieces typically feature flat or minimally detailed backs, unglazed bases with small release firing holes, and fine glaze crazing. Modern reproductions often exhibit slip-cast seam lines, heavier ceramic density, and overly clean undersides.

Display the ceramic figure as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a curated bookshelf, or placed on a sideboard alongside contemporary artwork. The warm colour palette adds textural contrast to modern minimalist or traditional settings.

Dust the ceramic surface regularly using a soft, dry artist brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing the figure in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, which can erode delicate overglaze enamel paint and gilt highlights.
