The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four Georges from 1714 to 1830, characterised by classical proportions, sophisticated craftsmanship, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

These pieces were typically crafted using dense tropical hardwoods such as Cuban or Honduras mahogany, often featuring secondary structural woods like oak or pine, and lined internally with wool baize or velvet.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional patination with wax accumulation in crevices, and hand-sawn timber marks rather than modern machine milling.

Position the piece closed against a hallway wall or living room perimeter to function as a console, displaying a ceramic lamp or a collection of hardback books on top.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax sparingly once a year, keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and baize fading.
